Hot Rolled Steel Windows & Doors in Boston, MA

Customers often ask us about hot rolled steel and cold rolled steel. The difference relates to the way these metals are processed at the mill, and not the product specification or grade. Hot rolled steel involves rolling the steel at high temperatures, where cold rolled steel is processed further in cold reduction mills where the material is cooled.

Cold rolled steel is essentially hot rolled steel that has had further processing. The material is cooled (to room temperature) followed by annealing. This process will produce steel with closer dimensional tolerances and a wider range of surface finishes.

The vast majority of our products are produced from hot rolled steel since the additional expense of cold rolled steel is typically not required by architects for doors and windows, although there are exceptions and we are happy to price those on request. For comparison, some familiar products made from cold rolled steel as opposed to hot rolled steel are filing cabinets, school lockers, and lawn mowers.
